about

In the late summer of 2016 cellist Jacqueline Hamelink invited pianist Stevko Busch and guitarist Aart Strootman to join her for a one-off improvised performance in a gigantic, empty hall in her hometown Tilburg. Located just north of the Tilburg railway station this building used to be a repair workshop for locomotives, and was scheduled for a substantial renovation to accommodate cultural institutions. As an empty shell the space manifested a spirit of its own, a distinctive character. Sounds occurring in the hall (and at some points outside it as well) rebounded off walls, ceiling, columns, and created eccentric, distorted reflections over a deep and variable murmur. It was the discovery of this sonic persona that prompted Hamelink to embark on this project, calling it ‘Derelict’ after the state of the building. She had performed with both musicians before. For Busch and Strootman this was the first time they played together. She chose them for their versatility, their inventiveness and their ability to respond to circumstances in their playing - best suited to engage in a conversation that would include the voice of the space.
